Both Curtis and Poitier received Best Actor Oscar nominations for their parts in this film, but the award went to David Niven for Separate Tables.
The Defiant Ones did win Oscars for Best Cinematography (Black–and–White) and Best Original Screenplay, and Poitier won the Silver Bear for Best Actor at the Berlin International Film Festival.
